Library and Documentation services

Kathmandu

The Institute maintains a small library and documentation unit. It has stock of books received from The Asia Foundation, American Center and Department of Journalism, Southern Carolina University, USA. NPI has recently launched its own web service to enable media professionals, academics and students providing access to documents of interest to them. Plan is underway to set up an IT (Information Technology) centre linking various media organizations through the web.

The NPI’s small library consists of a wide range of collections—from broadcasting and printing to human rights and good governance. The major titles include books on journalism methods, broadcasting, advertising, marketing, training and research. The library also contains valuable books on information technology, computer, gender issues, women and media, and web designing.

Over the years, the Institute has also developed a database to enable itself to keep track of trainees trained so far. The database contains name of the trainees and the programs they attended, plus their contact addresses and other details. Likewise, it also includes information on media trainers who worked as resource persons at the training programmes organized by the NPI.

Biratnagar:

RMRC-Biratnagar maintains a small library in its building. The library is mainly used for reference by trainers, researchers and students of journalism. Various books related to journalism, media and communication, business management, marketing, economics, human rights, computer, English language and various social issues are available in the library. There is also the collection of the full series of World Book Encyclopedia.

Besides the books, the library has a reading facility with almost all local and national newspapers and magazines. The past issues of Himal fortnightly, Samay Weekly, Nepal Weekly and national dailies upto two years old are kept in the archive. This archive has been of great support to the researching journalists.

RMRC-Biratnagar has also developed a database of the participants of its training, workshop and orientation programs. This database includes the bio-data of the trainees and their track record after the programs. These details are helpful for conducting follow-up programs and selection of participants in various other activities. Such database of journalists is not available at other organizations at the regional level. Hence it is an asset of RMRC-Biratnagar. With the database, RMRC-Biratnagar also provides help to various social service organizations and individuals who need the contact details of journalists.

Nepalgunj:

RMRC-Nepalgunj is maintaining its library. This library comprises books related to journalism, and others; its own publications; local, regional and national newspapers and magazines; some international magazines and journals; working papers; study reports; action alerts and other documents. Some international organizations viz. ICFTU (hard and soft copy), IFEX (soft copy), Forum on Politics, Culture and Business etc. have been regularly sending their publications. Last year the Indian Embassy donated some 4 dozen books to RMRC-Nepalgunj library. In the same way, some national and local organizations are voluntarily sending

heir publications. What is the public information hunting scenario in Nepalgunj is that general public are heavily depending upon RMRC-Nepalgunj’s library to be informed about current affairs, government as well as private sector’s notices including tenders, public auctions, advertisements and so on. Voracious readers, media people, researchers and general public are taking advantage of the library.

RMRC-Nepalgunj has also started to document press freedom and free expression violation incidents. Related press releases, action alerts and reports are being documented

This center possesses a television with cable connection. It has assisted journalists to monitoring moments and events of the fast changing world’s social and political scenarios

This center’s offering computer and e-mail services to media persons have become very fruitful. It has been facilitating media
